Do I need a permit to remove a load-bearing wall in Ontario?
Yes. Removing or altering a load-bearing wall changes how loads travel through your house, so municipalities require a building permit supported by engineered drawings. How do you confirm whether a wall is load-bearing?

Will my open-concept design need posts or columns?
Not always, but it depends on the span, the loads carried and the depth available in the ceiling. Longer clear spans need deeper or stronger beams, and sometimes a flush beam within the floor structure. Do you specify LVL or steel beams?
We size both, and we select based on span, load, available depth and how the beam will be installed. Engineered lumber such as LVL is common for moderate spans and is easier to handle on site. Steel is used where spans are long or the depth is tight. Our drawings state the exact member, the connections and the bearing requirements at each end.
Do you provide temporary shoring notes for the contractor?
Yes. Where temporary support is needed while the wall comes out, we provide shoring guidance as part of the package so the work sequence is clear and safe. This is one of the details plan reviewers and inspectors often look for.
